Heroes’ Monument is located in the center of the city, (Piata Unirii-en: Unity Square), in front of Cultural Centre (en: House of Culture), born from need of a symbol to represent the city, due to its millenary history and the importance it had in ancient times. The monument is modern, the basic material is Dobrogea Stone and is a triptych, oriented W-E: The Gate, The Altar and The Ascension. The inauguration took place on 09th May 1998- Heroes’ Day and Europe’s Day- date also chosen for celebrating Days of Mangalia. The monument has a bronze small plate, in Latin, that can be translated as follows: “It is a great honour to die for your country”. The heavy funeral sobriety of the edifice is in contrast with the grass’ freshness, the ancient symbol of regeneration and vitality.
