In the summer of 1993, The Museum of Archaeology Callatis Mangalia initiated archaeological rescue excavations of one of the most important tumulus in the area, also known as Movila Documaci. It has been discovered a funeral complex of large dimensions, consisting of a large tomb, E-W and a rectangular constructions, most likely a pedestal for another (funeral) monument, built after the tomb, both from massive chalk blocks. On the walls were sgraffiti with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic illustrations, as well as pentagrams and ships representations. These sgraffiti have correspondence with rupestral monuments from Basarabi, Aliman mine, Dumbraveni and Olteni complex and early medieval monuments in Bulgaria. The conclusion is that these drawings were made by the population in 10th and 12th centuries who used this tomb for living.
